ILS503 Foundations of Library Science with Dr. Jodi C. Williams
The role, ethics and values of librarianship were concepts addressed in
the first required course "Foundations of Library Science". We learned to write a principles and policy document for libraries
where the role, ethics and values of librarians are spelled out clearly for patrons to see if they need to. We also learned
the basic tenants of the Library Associations Bill of Rights and in terms of intellectual freedom we were instructed about the banned books week, about the history of the profession and
about librarians who contributed to the profession's advancement.
ILS560 College and University Libraries with Dr. James Kusack
We were instructed on the tenents of the college and university librarian
in this course building further upon the basics learned in ILS503. We discussed the role of the librarian in the context of
a university and especially his or her role vis-a-vis faculty members and students alike. Here especially we talked of intellectual freedom as well as positive and negative aspects
of copyright especially in today's electronic publishing and serials purchase agreements.
ILS565 Library Management with Dr. James Kusack
Here again we spoke of values and ethics and the role of the library from
the perspective of the librarian as manager. The emphasis was more on the librarian and employees working under him or her.
However the functioning of the library affects the service provided to patrons. Satisfied employees who communicate and work
well together provide a cohesive whole in providing programs, resources and services to library patrons.
