2. Resource Building

"Knows the basic concepts, terminology, literature and issues related to the creation, evaluation, and selection of specific items or collections of information. Has a conceptual grasp of the prevailing methods for the acquisition of specific items or collections of information resources. Has knowledge of the basic principles of storing, preserving and conserving information."1

ILS519 Acquisitions and Development: Library and Information Resources with Dr. Arlene C. Bielefeld

This class was instrumental in teaching the precepts of collection development both in terms of expanding and deaccessioning items. We also looked at the different sources for locating library materials in terms of publishers, book sellers, etc. We also discussed the ethics involved in the collection process.

For our final project we conducted an evaluation of a local library collection to gauge the effectiveness of supporting the needs of the users. We had to determine which books would stay, which could be let go and what books we would recommend be added to the collection and why. Although difficult, the exercise really brought home the necessity of providing appropriate books for patrons. I looked at the textile book collection at the library of the University of New Haven. Having a masters degree in costumes and textiles I felt best able to evaluate the textile collection and chose the one at the library of the University of New Haven.

ILS514 Materials and Services for Adults with Dr. Elsie Okobi

This class explored the needs of adult library users. Emphasis was placed on a reader's advisory for books  of various interests. Although geared more toward a public library model much of the rationale behind the reader's advisory is applicable to the college and university setting especially in terms of specialization.

ILS560 College and University Libraries with Dr. James Kusack

Here again we spoke of collection development but in the context of college and university libraries. We evaluated collections in terms of the number of students to collection size and compared them to other comparable libraries and their collections.
We spoke of serials collections especially and their collection characteristics in this electronic age.

ILS504 Reference and Information Resources and Services with Dr. Elsie Okobi

In this class we looked at the reference collection in particlar. We learned about the different types of reference materials and how they contribute to a collection. We examined an enormous amount of reference materials and evaluated their worth and appropriateness for particular collections.

ILS 655 Digital Libraries with Dr. Yan Quan Liu

This class looked at digital materials affording us the opportunity to evaluate different sources for their worth in particular collections and specifically in the realm of the digital library. In this technological age it was a very necessary aspect of collection development in today's library.
