ILS519 Acquisitions and Development: Library and Information Resources with Dr. Arlene C. Bielefeld
This class was instrumental in teaching
the precepts of collection development both in terms of expanding and deaccessioning items. We also looked at the different
sources for locating library materials in terms of publishers, book sellers, etc. We also discussed the ethics involved in
the collection process.
For our final project we conducted an evaluation of a local library collection to gauge the effectiveness of supporting
the needs of the users. We had to determine which books would stay, which could be let go and what books we would recommend
be added to the collection and why. Although difficult, the exercise really brought home the necessity of providing appropriate
books for patrons. I looked at the textile book collection at the library of the University of New Haven. Having a masters
degree in costumes and textiles I felt best able to evaluate the textile collection and chose the one at the library of the
University of New Haven.
ILS514 Materials and Services for Adults with Dr. Elsie Okobi
This class explored the needs of adult library users. Emphasis was placed on a reader's advisory
for books of various interests. Although geared more toward a public library model much of the rationale behind the reader's
advisory is applicable to the college and university setting especially in terms of specialization.
