"Can apply the basic principles involved in the organization and representation of knowledge and information structures. Understands

ILS506 Information Analysis and Organization with Mr. Anthony Oddo, Catalog Librarian
In this course we learned the basics of organizing and describing library materials for the proper placement of objects
in the collection and for ease of retrieval. We learned the basics of LC call numbers, subject identification, cutter numbers
and other information structures. Assignments were hands on exercises in creating call numbers for books. We also learned
the basics of a bibliographic record and its organization coming to understood that a well made bibliographic record and properly
created call number can materially assist in the service aspect of libraries. Cataloging helps the patron find the information
he or she needs faster and better.
ILS 655 Digital
Libraries with Dr. Yan Quan Liu
Working with digital
objects, such as photographs, we learned to identify and describe them using metadata. We learned the rudimentary structure
of metadata and looked at metadata used in actual websites. It was an interesting contrast to the typical cataloguing process
which is much more involved. Digital resources especially need to be well described to be retrievable in the online environment
which is so vast today and will undoubtedly grow with time.
