7. Knowledge Inquiry: Research

"Understands the nature of research, research methods and research findings within the library and information fields and has an awareness of current literature in these and related areas.
Is familiar with the fundamentals of research, survey and data collection designs of current or potential value to library and information settings."1

Many courses contributed to teaching concepts of research and evaluation of sources. "The Introduction to Technology and Library Science" course gave a foundation of searching strategies using search engines and evaluating information. The "Digital Libraries" course taught the evaluation of websites, digital library resources.

Four courses in particular contributed to learning research methods, investigation of current literature, survey construction and data collection and evaluation: "Field Experience", "Independent Study", "College and University Libraries" and "Research Techniques and Evaluation". The Field Experience and Independent Study also provided an opportunity to write an article for publication.

ILS680 Evaluation And Research with Dr. Eino Sierpe

This labor intense course taught the fundamentals of research methods and the evaluation of studies in particular. We learned the ethical methods of information gathering especially when working conducting surveys with human subjects. We learned to construct a proper idea and title or theme for a study and then to conduct and write up an appropriate report. We did an intense amount of reading on current studies in the library and information science literature.

ILS560 College and University Libraries with Dr. James Kusack
"Is familiar with the fundamentals of research, survey and data collection designs of current or potential value to library and information settings."

For this course we learned to research libraries themselves and to evaluate them vis-a-vis other libraries. We also conducted small scale studies of libraries, in this case college and university libraries. I conducted a small study of Women's College libraries and their use of library liaisons  and by looking at their library websites to see how well they interact with and support faculty.

ILS585 Field Project with Dr. Yan Quan Liu
"Is familiar with the fundamentals of research, survey and data collection designs of current or potential value to library and information settings."

I was fortunate to take this course and take part in a study, by compiling gathered information and writing a report, then writing an article and a powerpoint presentation for a meeting of the American Society of Information Science and Technology. The article was published in the "Public Libraries" magazine in 2009.

ILS600 Independent Study with Dr. Yan Quan Liu
"Is familiar with the fundamentals of research, survey and data collection designs of current or potential value to library and information settings."

With this course I had the opportunity to work on a study from concept to finish. I helped update the questionnaire and have it copied into Chinese and Spanish, compile the information from the returned questionnaires and wrote up the reports and helped write an article from the results. This was a tremendous opportunity to see the entire process of conducting a study.
