ILS501 Introduction to Information Science and Technology with Dr. Hak Joon Kim

With Dr. Hak Joon Kim we learned the basic structure of the Internet and World Wide Web, web browsers and URLs. We learned also how to use the search engine to find information using Boolean Operators as well as advanced searching functions. We analyzed different search engine to see how they differ in retrieving information and we evaluated the quality of the information returned. We also worked with proximity searches using near, before and after and truncation. We also looked at the relevance of information retrieved and the quality. We also discussed the Deep Web directories and databases.

We discussed security on the Web, including pop-ups and cookies and the usage of anti-virus software. We looked at recognizing secure sites and questionable ones. We talked about the types of viruses and worms and their potential threats.

ILS585 Field Project with Dr. Yan Quan Liu and ILS600 Independent Study with Dr. Yan Quan Liu

Taking these courses entailed working with analyzing public library digital resources and services. They included two studies that looked at how patrons view  the digital resources and services at their local public library.

ILS 655 Digital Libraries with Dr. Yan Quan Liu
  • In the "Digital Libraries" course we evaluated the uses of common functions of navigation buttons and other interface design features of web pages. We learned to download and upload Word documents, files from the Internet, including image, audio, and video for our own small digital libraries. We also learned to create PDF pages.
ILS680 Evaluation And Research with Dr. Eino Sierpe

With Dr. Sierpe we worked on evaluating sources of information from studies to webpages and their worth and relevance to a search. We learned to look for reliable sources of information regardless of whether they were in a subscription database or on the World Wide Web.
