ILS501 Introduction to Information Science and Technology with Dr. Hak Joon Kim
Each course required the understanding of computers since all courses were taken online. I used disks
and USB drives to backup some projects. Taking online classes necessitated troubleshooting to the best of one's ability, especially
at the beginning and whenever the software and interface used by the Library Science program and WebCT was changed. However,
I did call tech support and the distance learning librarian a couple of times for assistance.
However, it was ILS501 that taught us the terminology,
the functions of computer components, networks, peripherals,. We learned the history of the computer and its development.
We covered both hardware and software issues. We learned the importance of keeping up with the new technology and doing research
so that any purchase of hardware or software for the library is cost effective.
Graduate Assistantship with Dr. Yan Quan Liu
As a graduate assistant I helped the students in the "ILS501 Introduction
to Information Science and Technology" with Dr. Yan Quan Liu to prepare for the final exam
of the course in a "Review Class". We talked about the need for librarians to know the rudiments of computers and peripherals
in assisting patrons and colleagues at the library when things go wrong, when paper gets jammed, printing cartridges need
changing, etc.. I also had the chance to present a paper at a meeting and had to put the powerpoint presentation onto a USB drive to be
able to upload it onto the computer at the meeting and to show it using the projector.
